 INFECTION PREVENTION & PATIENT SAFETY
PATIENT SAFETY IS PRIMARY
The safety of our patients has been a top priority since the very beginning at Hoag Orthopedic Institute, and it remains an ongoing commitment. Over the years, HOI has been a leader in adopting innovative infection prevention measures, including the Xenex UV disinfecting robot, high- efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration in the operating room laminar flow system, and the addition of the 2019 universal decolonization protocol to reduce the risk of infections.
TRACKING VIA THE STANDARDIZED INFECTION RATIO (SIR)
HOI has consistently achieved a lower (better) than expected SIR.
Standardized Infection Ratio (SIR) is a risk- adjusted measure to track Healthcare-associated Infections (HAI) over time. The SIR compares the actual number of HAI reported to the number predicted given the standard population (using the National Health Safety Network [NHSN] baseline), adjusting for several risk factors that have been found to be significantly associated with differences in infection incidence.
The SIR allows for comparison to the national benchmark for a baseline time period and can be used to measure progress from a single point in time. A complex SIR refers to deep/organ space surgical site infections that can require extensive treatment.
REDUCING DEVICE-RELATED HEALTHCARE-ASSOCIATED INFECTIONS
Indwelling medical devices are associated with HAI, especially in critically ill patients. The two most common device-related infections are central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) and urinary catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). At HOI we carefully monitor for these HAI and have implemented practices to decrease the risk of infection. Clinical staff are trained to manage these devices and efforts have been made to reduce or eliminate their use whenever possible.
