“DOING WHAT IS BEST FOR THE PATIENT REQUIRES CONSTANT VIGILANCE IN PROTOCOL CONSISTENCY.”
ROBERT CHO, MD; CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE
IMMUNIZATIONS
At HOI, all inpatients are screened for pneumococcal vaccination and, during the six- month u season, for in uenza. Unvaccinated patients who meet risk criteria are offered the vaccines while they are hospitalized.
In uenza Vaccinations
In 2016, HOI exceeded expectations with 99 percent of patients accurately screened. This is higher than both the national and state averages. HOI encourages patients to have the vaccination prior to having surgery.
HOI also implemented a policy that encourages all health care providers to receive the vaccination. At the start of the 2015-2016 u season, 93 percent of its health care providers had received the vaccination. This places HOI
in the top quartile of California hospitals for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy People 2020 target of 90 percent. During the u season, health care providers who decline to have the vaccine are required to wear a mask per policy for patients’ well-being.
Pneumonia Immunizations
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that all adults
65 years of age or older receive a pneumonia vaccination, which is deemed highly effective in preventing pneumococcal disease – a serious and potentially deadly illness. There are also patients younger than 65 with health conditions that qualify them to receive a pneumonia vaccine.
