“THROUGH VIGOROUS INFECTION PREVENTION EFFORTS, HOI PATIENTS EXPERIENCED 68 PERCENT FEWER INFECTIONS THAN PREDICTED BY
THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION.”
PHILIP ROBINSON, MD; MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF INFECTION PREVENTION
STANDARDIZED INFECTION RATIO (SIR)
The SIR provides a risk-adjusted measure that allows HOI to compare its infection outcomes with hospitals across the nation. SIR is not intended
to compare one hospital directly to another, since the data is based on the individual hospital’s patient risk factors.
As a national benchmark, SIR is utilized by more than 12,000 medical facilities. Each facility uploads healthcare-associated infection (HAI) data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). The NHSN then performs statistical analysis for risk adjustment. Hospitals compare their risk-adjusted infection data to national (NHSN) data, and are able to monitor their individual progress over time.
The SIR shows the number of infections observed over the number of infections predicted based on a facility’s patient risk factors. HOI’s SIR of 0.32 indicates that HOI patients had 68% fewer infections than predicted.
