“HOI’S BIGGEST ADVANTAGE COMES FROM WORKING TOGETHER WITH SPECIALISTS. WE ALL HAVE THE SAME FOCUS. IF WE IDENTIFY A PROBLEM, WE SIT DOWN TOGETHER TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THINGS BETTER.” STEVEN GAUSEWITZ, MD, CHIEF OF STAFF

INNOVATIONS
Few of today’s myriad medical advances have the potential to improve the nation’s ailing healthcare system more than transformative value-based healthcare strategies. In essence, value-based care means maximizing value for the patient by achieving the best outcomes at the lowest cost.
An October 2013 Harvard Business Review article breaks down high-value healthcare delivery systems into the following six interdependent components. HOI has implemented all six components:
• Organize into Integrated Practice Units
(IPUs) – Integrated practice units organize
care around the patient’s medical needs. By exclusively providing comprehensive orthopedic care, HOI can be described as an IPU.
• Measure outcomes and costs for every patient – HOI’s commitment to rigorously tracking its progress and transparency has been key in achieving outstanding outcomes.
• Move to bundled payment for care cycles – HOI has been an early adopter of bundled payment system (see next page).
• Integrate care delivery across separate facilities – HOI’s orthopedic services are coordinated and delivered from its facilities in Irvine, Newport Beach and Orange.
• Expand excellent services across geography – HOI’s Travel Program is one way that HOI patients overcome geographic limitations
(see next page).
• Build an enabling information technology platform – Since opening its doors three years ago, HOI has operated with a progressive IT platform that includes an electronic medical record.
HOI is among the first organizations fully aligned with all of these transformative value-based strategies. By focusing first and foremost on value for patients, HOI has proven to be well positioned for success and growth.
