COMPREHENSIVE SPORTS MEDICINE CARE
The Sports Medicine Program at Hoag Orthopedic Institute brings together a comprehensive team
of fellowship-trained surgeons and physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of sports and physical activity-related injuries. Whether working with a professional athlete, a high school competitor or an active adult, the team’s objective is to help patients achieve their goals and return to their highest level of functioning.
Orange County is home to professional sports teams, elite athletes and individuals who enjoy
an active lifestyle. HOI continues to expand and enhance the Sports Medicine Program to meet the growing demand for high-quality, expert sports medicine care. This includes teaching the next generation of sports medicine doctors through the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.
“We are passionate about serving the Orange County community and beyond through the program,” says David Gazzaniga, MD, HOI Sports Medicine division chief and head team doctor for the Los Angeles Chargers. “We will continue to improve upon the program, help train athletes, identify problems, prevent injuries and teach other sports medicine doctors.”
COMMITMENT TO ATHLETES
HOI’s commitment to athletes is reflected not only in its partnerships with professional sports teams, but also in its support of the local athletic community. HOI physicians volunteer to provide team coverage for high school and college teams in Orange County alongside their athletic trainer programs.

THE LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
In collaboration with Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, HOI has been the official health care partner of the Los Angeles Chargers since 2017. Through the multi-year partnership, HOI’s fellowship-trained physicians are available to the team 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provide coverage at the Annual NFL Combine, training camps, home and away games, and other settings. They also work with the Chargers’ coaches, administration, families and ownership to navigate their healthcare needs.
