 OUR MISSION
TO RESTORE, IMPROVE AND ENHANCE THE HEALTH AND MOBILITY OF INDIVIDUALS WITH MUSCULOSKELETAL CONDITIONS AND DISEASES THROUGH EXCELLENCE IN CARE AND OUTCOMES, CLINICAL INNOVATION, RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY.
WELCOME FROM THE CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER
Now completing our seventh year of care delivery, Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) continues to strive for excellence in clinical medicine and tertiary care orthopedics. We are proud of the fact that HOI has provided meticulous services to more knee and hip replacement patients than any other provider in the state of California for the past six years. This year, I would like to highlight a few important and unique aspects of our institution that provide a better care delivery experience to our patients and a higher level of orthopedic expertise to the region.
The “silver tsunami” is upon us and, with this aging population, the nation’s volume of hip and knee replacement patients rises year over year. HOI is also managing an increasing caseload of complex and often difficult revision hip, knee, and shoulder reconstructions. HOI’s Complex Joint Revision Center performs nearly 400 revision surgeries annually as a regional tertiary care center for referring physicians and patients with complex joint replacement concerns, including infected and failed implants.
One of the most vexing issues we currently face is the opioid epidemic. Through clinical studies completed and underway at HOI, we are modifying prescribing practices to prevent substance abuse while still resolving pain. We are also aggressively working with cutting edge technology, such as
new and innovative regional anesthetic techniques and indwelling post-surgical pain management modalities that significantly improves post-surgical mobility and, at the same time, reduces the need for narcotic medications.
In 2017, HOI embarked on new relationships with the Los Angeles Chargers Football franchise and the Orange County Soccer Club. These partnerships would not be possible if not for the tireless sports medicine physicians who volunteer copious amounts of time to keep these teams – as well as numerous other collegiate and elite scholastic athletes – functioning at their best.
Finally, we highlight our outstanding allied health professionals. Nurse practitoners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) are adding more value than ever to HOI’s care continuum. The expertise they contribute to the team minimizes the overall cost of care, while maximizing a holistic approach. They will be essential
in the years to come to meet the accelerating demand for orthopedic care and withstand the projected shortage of physicians and surgeons.
As my friend and well-respected health care analyst and advisor Dave Johnson, CEO of 4Sight Health, often states: “Outcomes matter, customers count, and value rules.” Our HOI 2018 Outcomes Report illuminates how HOI strives to optimize outcomes and value for our patients and community. We hope the insights we share will be of value to you.
Let’s Keep Moving.
