Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) is the West Coast’s premier hospital and surgery center network dedicated solely to orthopedic and spine care. For over a decade, HOI’s physicians have performed the highest volume of joint and shoulder replacement surgeries on the West Coast and the most spine surgeries in Orange County. HOI is ranked nationally in orthopedics by U.S. News & World Report and is proud to be the only hospital with a 5-star rating in greater Los Angeles metropolitan region for patient experience. HOI is also the only hospital in Orange County to earn a 5-star rating for excellence in hospital cleanliness.
Robotic Joint Replacement Leader
In 2024 to early 2025, HOI reached another robotic surgery milestone, performing more than 1,000 robotic-assisted joint replacement surgeries. Robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery at HOI combines the expertise of the hospital’s renowned, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons with advanced robotic systems that increase surgical efficiency which ultimately support patient outcomes. There are 10 orthopedic surgical robots in use at HOI and its affiliated surgery center network for joint replacement alone.
Research and Education in a Private Practice Setting
For more than a decade, HOI surgeons have contributed to and supported higher education, research and community outreach through Hoag Orthopedics, a not-for-profit organization. HOI doctors contributed to 25 academic papers during the 2024-2025 academic year, including several level 1 clinical trials spanning topics throughout adult reconstructive and spinal surgery. HOI surgeons also contributed to educating the next generation of orthopedic surgeons through three post-residency fellowship programs in adult reconstruction, spine surgery, and an ACGME accredited sports medicine program. Building a Healthy Community
Through sponsorships of youth sports organizations, physicians donating their time on the field and HOI staff volunteering to educate seniors at local community centers, HOI is making an impact throughout Orange County. HOI continues to support student athletes and athletic trainers through partnerships with many local high school programs including the CIF-Southern Section, Trinity League and Irvine Public Schools Foundation. Thousands of community members have attended or had access to live education classes with fellowship-trained surgeons, physical therapists and nursing educators throughout the year.
