“EVERY MEMBER OF OUR TEAM HAS A ROLE TO PLAY IN INFECTION PREVENTION.”

INFECTION PREVENTION & PATIENT SAFETY CONTINUED
ULTRAVIOLET (UV) DISINFECTION
HOI’s newly upgraded Xenex robot on wheels
is used each evening after routine cleaning to further disinfect patient care areas and further minimize patients’ risk of infection. HOI acquired Orange County’s first Xenex in 2014. It uses high-intensity ultraviolet light to destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and bacterial spores that can cause healthcare-associated infections.

While CDC estimates that about one in 25 U.S. hospital patients has at least one healthcare- associated infection, far fewer occur at HOI because of its investment and diligence in infection prevention. According to Infection Control Today, Xenex has proven to be
20 times more effective than standard chemical cleaning practices.
To further ensure any harmful pathogens are eliminated, in 2017 HOI has installed sanitizing UV lights adjacent to air handlers throughout critical areas of the hospital, including the operating rooms.
ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM (ASP)
Antimicrobial resistance is a significant issue that affects public health and particularly hospitalized patients. The CDC estimates that antimicrobial resistance causes at least two million illnesses and 23,000 deaths annually. Antimicrobial stewardship programs are an important element of antimicrobial resistance management in health care settings.
In 2017, HOI leadership continued to support the activities of the ASP team. This team measures and optimizes the appropriate use of antimicrobials at HOI. The objectives are to:
• Improve clinical outcomes
• Promote appropriate and cost effective use of
antimicrobials
• Minimize toxicity and other adverse events
• Minimize development of antimicrobial resistance.
