“OUR FOCUS IS IN ENCOURAGING THE ALIGNMENT BETWEEN CONSUMERS AND PROVIDERS THROUGH TRAVEL MEDICINE, QUALITY REPORTING, AND PRICE TRANSPARENCY. INITIATIVES THAT REWARD EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY BENEFIT US ALL.”

HEALTH AFFAIRS, AUGUST 21, 2014, “THE ‘FAILURE’ OF BUNDLED PAYMENT: THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSUMER INCENTIVES”
MEDICAL TRAVEL PROGRAM
The Medical Travel Program that began at HOI
in 2011 has seen steady gains. Because HOI contracts with all major payers, many out-of-area employers can negotiate with their insurance providers to send patients to HOI as a tactic to improve health care while managing costs. As a Blue Distinction Center® for Specialty Care, HOI is among a select number of facilities nationwide approved by Blue Cross and Blue Shield to receive travel patients. It is attractive to out-of-area patients and payers for several reasons:
Hoag Orthopedic Institute Travel Patient Care Plan
• Allows patients, regardless of where they live, to access a national orthopedic center of excellence.
• Assures value because lower quality care ultimately results in higher costs.
• Bundled or global rates covering all provider fees are easy for payers to manage. Knowing the total cost of care upfront simplifies administrative claim work while providing cost controls.
