COMMUNITY SERVICE AND OUTREACH
HOI SPORTS HEALTH REPORT
A new community service for professional, student and recreational athletes called the Sports Health Report began at HOI in 2013. Fellowship-trained and board-certified physicians from HOI specializing in sports medicine and orthopedics recorded several 30-second public service announcements (PSAs) on a range of musculoskeletal health topics, such as:
• Preventing shoulder injuries in athletes
• Signs of a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) • Heat illness avoidance
• Decreasing the risk of spinal injuries
• Symptoms of a concussion
The PSAs are available on HOI’s YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/HoagOrthopedic.
OWN THE BONE
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), up to 50 percent of all women and 25 percent of men over the age of 50 will sustain fragility fractures in their lifetime. Patient who have had a fragility fracture are two to four times more likely to experience another fracture than those who have never had a fracture. And yet, according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance, only one in five Medicare patients have received the osteoporosis care they needed after a fracture.
Aiming to prevent fractures in the community due to osteoporosis, in 2013 Hoag Orthopedic Institute launched an “Own the Bone®” Program. The “Own the Bone” program’s web-based patient registry allows for better identification, evaluation and treatment of patients who suffer from osteoporosis, and those who present at
HOI with a fracture because of low bone density- related fragility. “Own the Bone” incorporates
the following 10 measures for reducing future fractures to help ensure those needs continue to be met and benchmarked.

Additionally, an HOI clinical nurse specialist began educating the community’s youth on osteoporosis prevention, taking a well-received, age-appropriate “Best Bones Forever” presentation to local elementary school and high school students, and presenting a lecture to Cypress College nursing students.

Hoag Orthopedic Institute’s workforce is passionate about volunteering, locally and globally, from the top leadership to staff at all levels. In 2013, HOI allocated more than $1 million to charitable endeavors, which included nearly 300 patients encounters for underserved patients
