BACK TO: BIKING AND ACTIVE LIVING Patient: Jan Fluchere
Procedure: Hip Replacement
Between indoor and outdoor cycling, Barre classes, and strength training, being active is a way of life for Jan Fluchere. When recurrent back pain started slowing her down, Jan assumed
her back was the problem, but an X-ray showed the pain was stemming from an issue with her hip. “After looking at the X-ray, my doctor told me that I probably needed a hip replacement,” shared Jan.
Conversations with trusted friends led Jan to Hoag Orthopedic Institute, where she decided to move forward with hip replacement surgery. After three months of physical therapy and acupuncture, Jan is as active as ever and even joined her husband for the Bike the Bay ride over Coronado Bridge in San Diego – a 27-mile ride.

BACK TO: WALKING WITHOUT PAIN Patient: Hoa Duong, DDS
Procedure: Total Hip Replacement
When she is not caring for patients in her dental practice, Dr. Hoa Duong enjoys bicycling and swimming to stay active. She endured years
of pain in her hip before deciding to visit an orthopedic specialist.
“I have a good pain tolerance, but I knew that I’d probably have to have my hip replaced in the near future,” shared Dr. Duong.
Dr. Duong chose Hoag Orthopedic Institute, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed her April surgery plans to May.
“As a healthcare professional, I was never concerned about safety at HOI,” said Dr. Duong. “I had a great referral, and from the first call I had with the nurse navigator at HOI, I knew they were very thorough, and I had a lot of faith in them. The day I walked in for my surgery, I was so confident that I was in expert hands.”
