 EDUCATION AND RESEARCH CONTINUED
CLINICAL STUDY TO WATCH: ZIMMER BIOMET’S MYMOBILITYTM
Hoag Orthopedic Institute has partnered with Zimmer Biomet, Apple, and fellow orthopedic providers on what will be one of the largest evidence-gathering clinical studies in orthopedic history. HOI is the only Southern California hospital and one of 18 sites throughout the U.S. participating in the Zimmer Biomet mymobilityTM clinical trial, launched in October 2018. The study seeks to assess the impact on patient outcomes and overall costs for as many as 10,000 joint replacement patients.
Zimmer Biomet’s mymobility app is used in conjunction with an Apple Watch® wrist wearable device and iPhone® mobile digital device. It enables users to share their health data with their surgeons, allowing them to take a more active role in these patient care and recovery processes.
The app has several features that use both Apple Watch and the iPhone, including the ability for surgeons to send education and therapy reminders directly to the patient’s Apple Watch. The app also allows surgeons to monitor patient activity levels throughout the days and weeks while they
are preparing for and recovering from surgery.
“Our research team is looking forward to analyzing the efficacy of this novel approach to tracking patients before and after joint replacement surgery,” says Steven Barnett, MD, orthopedic surgeon and principal
investigator for
the study at HOI.
“The ability to
accurately track
the activity levels
of our patients
will give us
quantitative,
unbiased
measurements to
further enhance and improve upon our patients’ experiences throughout the continuum of care.”

 NAON 10TH ANNUAL NURSING SYMPOSIUM
Building on its past success, the 10th Annual Nursing Symposium on Oct. 1 featured orthopedic surgeons and specialty speakers sharing their knowledge with a packed auditorium of health care professionals. The event attracted the largest turnout to date with 160 attendees from throughout California. Again in 2018, HOI cosponsored the event with the Orange County Chapter of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON).
