 NURSING SYMPOSIUM
On Oct. 9, 2017, nearly 140 registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists,
and physicians joined together to learn more about orthopedic patient care. The 9th Annual Orthopedic Symposium was an overwhelming success, with lots of personal growth for orthopedic staff, networking, and sharing of best practices. The day was filled by physician and nursing presentations. Attendees came from throughout California.
Topics highlighted insights into the nursing assessment that a recovery room nurse performs; regional anesthesia for post-operative pain; and a live-feed videoconference from the operating room of an enhanced recovery total knee replacement patient. Participants were able to interact with the surgeon as the surgery was being performed – this is always a crowd pleaser. Along with the surgery, there was a lecture
on total knee replacement and Q&A session following the surgery.
HOI presenters also discussed preoperative cardiovascular evaluation for orthopedic surgery; nursing care for a postoperative enhanced recovery total joint replacement patient; and insights into spine surgery. An interactive lecture on anxiety reduction techniques for caregivers and their patients taught the participants how to manage stress at work and in the hospital. The participants appreciated the techniques learned, especially the mindful breathing.
“ALL SPEAKERS WERE ENGAGING, INFORMATIVE, AND KNOWLEDGEABLE... THE LIVE FROM THE OPERATING ROOM SEGMENTS WERE GREAT; THE COLLABORATION TIME AMONGST THE PROFESSIONALS IS ADMIRABLE... THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME ATTENDING AND I WILL DEFINITELY BE RETURNING. THANK YOU FOR PUTTING TOGETHER SUCH A WELL-ORGANIZED SYMPOSIUM... I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR 10TH YEAR... THANK YOU FOR
A JOB WELL DONE; I APPRECIATED SPEAKERS’ WISDOM AND THAT THE SYMPOSIUM INCLUDED WELLNESS FOR THE NURSES.”
