INFECTION PREVENTION & PATIENT SAFETY CONTINUED
PROCESSING SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS
In FY 2017, approximately 6,200 instrument trays were processed monthly in the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) at HOI. This amounts to 12 trays per case. Although patients hear little about hospital SPDs, operations within this area are extremely important to the smooth functioning
of the surgical team as well as the prevention of Surgical Site Infections (SSI).
In an effort to improve our ability to rapidly process and safely deliver surgical instrumentation for
our surgical patients, the SPD has undertaken a number of steps to increase efficiencies throughout the year. Equipment has been purchased, and
new work flows have been created to make the workspace easier for employees to navigate. Expert consultants were employed to look at potential re-design strategies for the increasing
number of surgical trays brought to our facility. Team members in both the SPD and the operating room (OR) work together on process improvement to keep operations safe, on time, and with as close to zero percent SSIs as possible.
Prevention through Detection: Eliminating Contaminated Trays (Percent – Higher is Better)
Before use, every instrument is meticulously inspected to ensure it meets pristine standards and is ready for use. Any tray not meeting these standards is pulled, replaced and reprocessed to prevent any potential contamination. To optimize this process, tray sterilization compliance is tracked, with results shown in this graph.
