IMMUNIZATIONS
HOI ensures that all inpatients are appropriately screened for influenza and pneumococcal vaccination. These processes are performed to ensure the community’s health is protected.
Influenza Vaccination
In FY 2017 at HOI, 100 percent of patients were assessed and offered an influenza vaccination. This is above the California and national vaccination rate averages of 94 and 93 percent respectively.
Percent of Appropriate Patient Influenza Vaccinations (Percent – Higher is Better)
Patients are advised to have a flu vaccination before they are admitted for a procedure. This recommendation is also emphasized during
the pre-operative education classes, where misconceptions that keep individuals from having flu shots are debunked.
HOI also strongly encourages every staff member and physician to receive an influenza vaccination. Employees and medical staff members (Health Care Providers-HCP) who decline to have the flu vaccination are required to wear masks throughout flu season from October to as late as May, based on CDC guidelines. At the start of the 2016-17
flu season, 93 percent of hospital staff had the vaccination, placing HOI in the top quartile of California hospitals exceeding the Healthy People 2020 target of 90 percent.
Pneumonia Immunizations
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that all adults 65 years of age or older and individuals with specific risk factors receive a pneumonia vaccination. This immunization is stressed at HOI and is deemed highly effective in preventing pneumococcal disease – a serious and potentially deadly illness.
