LETTER FROM THE CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER
Orthopedics is a uniquely rewarding specialty because of the profound difference and rapid clinic rewards that can be achieved through procedures that enhance both mobility and pain relief for our patients. Most individuals, and in particular our elderly patient population, tend to take bone and joint health for granted until a life- limiting physical concern arises. For each of these individuals we serve, I nd great satisfaction in helping them get back to full and active lifestyles.
As I begin my seventh year as chief medical of cer at Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), I am more optimistic than ever that we will amplify
the impact we are making throughout greater Orange County, Southern California, and beyond. We strive to enhance the lives of men and women by restoring their musculoskeletal health through less invasive intervention and more rapid recovery in safer environments.
Our drive at HOI to truly be the very best
has enabled us to achieve and sustain an unprecedented, higher level of orthopedic care. HOI’s remarkable experience compels me to share how we are achieving our vision to be a trusted leader in medicine and become nationally recognized for our superior clinical outcomes, innovations, and patient value.
After years of careful planning with colleagues, HOI opened in 2010 as a partnership between Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian and a select group of Orange County’s most well-respected orthopedic surgeons. We also recruited the most talented health care professionals available, all of whom share our dedication to service excellence. Together we established care processes and delivery systems, laying the foundation for
our future success. Focusing exclusively on musculoskeletal care gave us a distinct advantage, and HOI quickly established itself as the region’s foremost “problem solver” for complex orthopedic issues and tertiary care needs.
Our collective expertise extends far beyond the bedside. HOI’s seasoned orthopedic specialists and subspecialists share their expertise and research nationally and internationally. HOI is a forerunner in public reporting of its outcomes data. We provide fellowship training to help ful ll the potential of today and tomorrow’s bright, young orthopedic surgeons. And, we are increasing awareness in the community about how to prevent and manage arthritis and other debilitating musculoskeletal issues.
Teamwork on these focused efforts, in conjunction with our outstanding clinical leadership group and using a very horizontally oriented guidance and feedback process, has yielded tremendous results. HOI has been recognized as California’s highest volume provider of hip and knee joint replacement procedures for several years running and, from 2012 to 2015, HOI has achieved the lowest readmission rate in the nation. In 2016, HOI was one of only 102 elite hospitals nationally recognized with a top, ve-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
HOI is well positioned to continue implementing change that increases access to services, brings greater ef ciencies, and ultimately maximizes value in our delivery of orthopedic care. For
our patients, and for the medical profession in general, remedies are powered by teamwork and collaboration. There is much work yet to be done. Let’s keep moving.
