“HOI USES THE LATEST TECHNIQUES AS WELL AS CONTINUED PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT IN OUR STERILE PROCESSING DEPARTMENT TO BE THE
FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE IN PROTECTING OUR SURGICAL PATIENTS AGAINST INFECTIONS, THEREBY FACILITATING OPTIMAL OUTCOMES.”

ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM
Antimicrobial resistance is a signi cant issue that affects public health and particularly hospitalized patients. The CDC estimates that antimicrobial resistance causes at least 2 million illnesses and 23,000 deaths annually. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) are an important element of antimicrobial resistance management in health care settings.
In 2016, HOI leadership continued to support the activities of the ASP team, which measures and optimizes the appropriate use of antimicrobials with objectives to:
• Improve clinical outcomes
• Promote appropriate and cost effective use
of antimicrobials
• Prevent adverse events
• Minimize development of antimicrobial resistance.
The HOI medical director of Infection Prevention, Pharmacy manager and Infection Prevention manager have all completed focused training in antimicrobial stewardship.
Antimicrobial stewardship at HOI includes standardized preoperative antibiotics, implementation of a standardized probiotic program, review and adoption of an antibiogram, utilization review and reporting of ASP activities to leadership. HOI Infection Prevention and Orthopedic Fracture teams have collaborated on a study to eliminate unnecessary postoperative antibiotic use.
PROCESSING SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS
HOI fosters a strong surgical philosophy: “When in doubt, throw it out.” Surgical instruments demand a stringent sterilization process as it is vital in protecting patients from infections.
In the operating room, multiple processes are in place to ensure adequate sterilization. In 2015 HOI implemented the use of One-Tray® ‘Just-In-Time’ terminal sterilization system. One-Tray offers
an ef cient, timesaving and reliable solution
to substantially improve and safely expedite
the processing of surgical instrumentation and temperature-tolerant supplies.
Clockwise: HOI Sterile Processing Department decontaminates and wraps the instruments prior to sterilization.
